Generator Specialists vs General Electricians

What Google's own labels say about the 480 companies

Each record has a business-type label from Google Maps rather than from this site's taxonomy. Of the 480 records, 306 are labeled Electrician. Another 60 are labeled Electrical installation service. HVAC contractor is the label for 47. Electric generator shop, the only label in the set that names generators at all, covers 20. The next largest categories are air conditioning repair service and furnace repair service, each at 9; energy equipment and solutions at 7; electrical engineer at 6; air conditioning contractor at 4; and corporate office at 3. These ten labels are the ones included in the index, and they do not account for every one of the 480 records.

These labels describe the business itself. Each company selects its own primary category on its Google profile, and in this market most selected a trade over a product. A firm that earns most of its revenue from panels, wiring and service calls, while generator jobs come in only a few times a year, is accurately labeled electrician.

The label alone gives you very little. It indicates nothing about how many standby units a company has commissioned, how recently, or what size they are. The index has no field for those questions either, so the label is a starting point and nothing more.

How many companies here actually claim generator work

The site's own categories supply a second reading, and a company can appear in more than one of them. Standby Generator Installation lists 56 companies. Electrical Panel Upgrades lists 97. Electricians lists 369. After those, the specialist categories drop off quickly: HVAC & Fuel Line Contractors 74, Commercial Backup Power 12, Home Battery Backup 9, Transfer Switch Installation 8, and Generator Repair & Maintenance 7.

What matters is the overlap between those lists. The Standby Generator Installation category has 56 companies; 32 of them are also under Electricians, and 20 are also under Electrical Panel Upgrades. Twelve list standby generator installation as their only category. So most standby entries in this index belong to firms that present themselves first as electrical contractors and second as generator installers.

A good way to see how narrow these claims get is to look at the 8 companies under transfer switch installation. Every permanent standby installation includes a transfer switch, yet 56 companies claim the installation and 8 claim the switch. The category count, then, reflects how a business chooses to label itself, not the work a job actually includes.

The category counts already point to the same conclusion. A market containing 369 electricians and 7 dedicated repair and maintenance records is a general electrical market with a generator product line running through part of it, rather than a market of generator-only firms.

The twelve records that carry standby work alone

Twelve companies list standby generator installation as their only category: Bulldog Generators in Whitchurch-Stouffville (4.4 from 47 reviews), Aurora Generators in Newmarket (4.9 from 46), Northern Generator Company Ltd. in Vaughan (4.6 from 29), AVR Generators in Orono (4.4 from 21), First Power Generators in Newmarket (4.2 from 11), Pritchard Power Systems in Mississauga (5 from 10), Genercare in Burlington (5 from 10), Genworx Power Systems in Ajax (5 from 4), Standby Generator Services Inc in Ajax (4.3 from 3), GridIron Power Inc. in Milton (5 from 3), Mobile Power Sales in Richmond Hill (3.7 from 3), and LUGERO INDUSTRIES in Markham, which carries no rating on record.

That list has two features that should be stated directly. Not one of the twelve is in the old City of Toronto. They lie across the outer ring, in Newmarket, Whitchurch-Stouffville, Orono, Milton, Ajax, Burlington and the larger 905 cities, where detached houses with side yards and gas meters at grade are common.

Sample size is the second feature. Of the twelve, nine have fewer than 30 reviews and four have fewer than five. A five-star average that rests on three reviews reflects three transactions. It does not describe a company, and it cannot be compared to a record with hundreds of reviews as if the two numbers mean the same thing.

The multi-category records carry most of the review history

In the standby category, the larger review histories belong to companies that also say they do electrical work. Captain Electric in Pickering holds a 4.9 from 815 reviews covering electricians, standby generator installation and electrical panel upgrades. Calibre Electric | Generac Generators in Burlington has a 4.8 from 453 reviews covering standby generator installation, transfer switch installation and electrical panel upgrades. Circuit Savvy Electric in Mississauga has a 4.8 from 240 reviews, MCS Electrical Solutions Ltd in Burlington has a 5 from 227, Power Blitz Electrical in York Mills has a 4.9 from 202, and Fateh Plumbing & Electric in Brampton has a 4.8 from 181, all in the same set of electrical and generator categories.

Each of those counts is larger than 47, which is the largest count among the twelve standby-only records. For a company that also wires basements, changes panels, and installs pot lights, the review record is mostly a record of that other work. It shows a lot about how the company handles a service call and very little about how many generators it has commissioned.

Neither pattern gives a definite answer. A generalist with 815 reviews has a long, visible service history, but the amount of generator experience that person has is unknown. For a specialist with 3 reviews, the service history is unknown and a category claim is present. The dataset leaves open which of those counts more for a particular job.

Why a generator job crosses two licensing bodies

A permanent standby generator installation in Ontario requires an ESA electrical permit, and an ESA-licensed electrical contractor must pull that permit. If the unit runs on natural gas or propane, a TSSA-licensed gas fitter must also perform or supervise the gas fitting under a separate TSSA permit. One machine, two authorities, two approvals.

That split is what gives the market its shape. The electrical side is standard licensed electrical work: a transfer switch, a feeder, a tie-in at the panel. In its 2026 Toronto guide, RenoHouse prices the electrical tie-in, which an ESA Master Electrician performs and which includes panel and transfer switch wiring, at $1,800 to $2,400, and prices the gas line from the meter, which a TSSA-licensed sub-contractor runs over a 30 to 50 foot run, at $1,200 to $2,200. An electrical contractor can complete the first line item in house and buy the second.

A business listed as an electric generator shop requires the same two permits and falls under the same division of trades. It is more likely to hold a manufacturer dealership, but the index includes no dealership field, so that cannot be confirmed from these records. The complete itemised breakdown for a Toronto installation sits on the standby generator installation cost page, and the hourly electrical figures sit on the electrician rates page.

What the ratings can and cannot separate

For the 468 rated companies in the index, the mean rating is 4.76 and the median is 4.9, with observed values running from 1 to 5. When averages are packed this tightly, they separate companies very little. Any real differences that exist among these 480 companies do not show up in the star rating.

Review counts also set providers apart, though not in a direction that helps a generator buyer. The median company in the index has 28 reviews, while the largest single record has 29,834. Those very large totals belong to home-services businesses rather than generator companies: Reliance Home Comfort in Burlington holds a 4.8 rating from 29,834 reviews, and Enercare in Markham holds a 4.6 rating from 25,996. Both appear under HVAC & Fuel Line Contractors, a category where furnace and water-heater review volume builds up over many years.

Generator experience is not what either field measures. A company can collect hundreds of reviews by replacing panels and installing pot lights, while another can install standby units for a decade in a market where few customers review equipment they hope never to hear run. The index reports the count and the average. It does not identify the subject of any review, and it contains no field that would.

What these records do not hold

A record may include a rating, a review count, a phone number, an address, coordinates, and a website. Of the 480 records, 440 have websites, 472 have phone numbers, and 459 have addresses. A profile shows the phone number only once the company claims its listing; until then it carries a request form. No record has an email address, so none of these companies can be contacted by email through this index.

Here, the fields that are absent matter more than the ones that are present. Licence numbers, years in business, employee count, dealership status, warranty terms, and whether any job finished on schedule are not recorded in the index. For the fields the index does contain, a self-described generator specialist and a self-described electrician are indistinguishable except by the category list each one claims. The question of who has actually installed more generators sits outside this dataset, in ESA licence records and in the quotes themselves.

Frequently asked questions

How many generator specialists are in this index?

Google Maps applies the label electric generator shop to 20 of the 480 companies, while 306 are labeled simply as electricians. In this site's own category structure, 56 companies appear under standby generator installation, and 12 of those use it as their only category. Among the remaining 44, 34 list generator work alongside electrical, panel or HVAC categories on the same record, and the other 10 combine it with other generator categories.

Does an electrician need a separate licence to install a generator?

Electrical work in Ontario must be filed under an ESA permit obtained by an electrical contractor licensed by ESA. When the unit runs on natural gas or propane, a gas fitter licensed by TSSA must perform or supervise the gas fitting under a separate TSSA permit. The index does not indicate which licences any listed company holds.

Why do so many generator listings also appear under Electricians?

The standby generator installation category has 56 companies; 32 of them are also listed under Electricians, and 20 under Electrical Panel Upgrades. RenoHouse charges $1,800 to $2,400 for the electrical tie-in that includes panel and transfer switch wiring. Since this is ordinary licensed electrical work, an electrical contractor can handle most of the job directly.

Do the specialists have better ratings than the generalists?

The data provide no answer to that question. Among the 468 rated companies in the index, the mean rating is 4.76 and the median is 4.9, a spread too narrow to distinguish one company from another. Nine of the 12 standby-only records carry fewer than 30 reviews, and four carry fewer than five; this sample is too small to compare against a generalist record.

What does the index not tell me about a generator installer?

The dataset contains a rating, a review count, a phone number, an address, coordinates and, in most cases, a website. It does not include email addresses, licence numbers, years in operation, dealership status, warranty terms or completion data. No field in the dataset indicates the number of generators a company has installed.

Figures on this page, and where each came from

RenoHouse's 2026 Toronto guide sets the electrical tie-in, done by an ESA Master Electrician and including panel and transfer switch wiring, at $1,800 to $2,400. It sets the gas line from the meter, installed by a TSSA-licensed sub-contractor over a 30 to 50 foot run, at $1,200 to $2,200.
