When Does a Panel Have to Be Upgraded Before a Generator?
A generator quote may need a panel upgrade first when the main electrical panel cannot take the generator's transfer switch. RenoHouse's Toronto standby generator guide says a 100-amp panel typically needs upsizing to 200-amp before the automatic transfer switch goes in. It lists that step as adding $2,500 to $3,500 to the project.
Two terms carry most of this article. Service size is measured in amps, the unit of electrical current, and names the most current the utility supply and main panel are built to carry. An automatic transfer switch (ATS) is the device that moves the house from utility power to the generator during an outage.
Kolji Bros. Electrical, an Ontario electrical contractor, says many Ontario homes may need a panel upgrade before a generator goes in. Its Ontario pricing guide names these signs:
- a main panel rated at 100 amps or less
- a fuse box instead of breakers
- no space left for the transfer switch breakers
- a whole-home standby generator on the order
- a panel that is outdated or in poor condition
None of these shows up on a quote that only prices the generator side of the job. The switch connects at the main panel, as how a generator ties into your panel traces step by step. That makes the panel the first thing to open and check.

What an Itemised Generator Quote Leaves Out
RenoHouse's Toronto guide itemises an example project built around a 16 kW standby generator. A kilowatt (kW) is the unit of a generator's output. Besides the generator cabinet, the guide lists these parts:
- a poured concrete pad at $400 to $700
- a gas line from the meter at $1,200 to $2,200, run by a gas fitter who notifies the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA), Ontario's fuel safety regulator
- the electrical tie-in to the panel and switch at $1,800 to $2,400
- a 200-amp service-rated ATS with load management at $1,400 to $1,800
- permits, inspections and commissioning, the first start-up and check of the finished system, at $400 to $700
The same guide describes a service-rated ATS as one mounted between the utility meter and the main panel. Its load-management module sheds heavy loads such as an EV charger, electric range or dryer when the air conditioner or heat pump starts.
The guide puts the whole installed project at $11,100 to $14,800, a total that also covers the generator cabinet and RenoHouse's coordination and finishing work. It says the total depends on gas line length, panel condition and finishing scope. There is no panel upgrade line in the list, even though the same guide flags panel age as a common reason the total moves.
Kolji Bros. Electrical prices a 100-amp to 200-amp panel upgrade at $1,400 to $1,800. It says the upgrade is often done at the same time as the generator installation. The site's standby generator installation cost page holds each of these component rows with its source.
Two quotes for the same house can differ by the whole cost of a panel and both be accurate about what they include. Ask each installer whether its price assumes a 200-amp panel is already in place. The questions to ask before signing a generator quote cover the rest of the line items.

What a 100-Amp to 200-Amp Upgrade Costs in Toronto
Published Toronto prices for a 100-amp to 200-amp upgrade do not agree, and each source defines its number differently:
- RenoHouse's panel guide: $1,500 to $4,000, including the panel, installation, permit and an inspection by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), Ontario's electrical safety regulator
- Foxwood Electric, a Toronto electrician that is also listed in this index: $2,400 to $4,000 for a contractor's materials and labour, which its worked example brings to $3,300 to $4,900 once hydro and inspection fees are added
- Amps Logics Electric, a Toronto-area electrician (a company of that name is listed in this index): $3,500 to $6,500 or more, with added costs possible for service mast upgrades, utility coordination, and permit and inspection fees
- Electrician in Toronto: generally $2,500 to $3,000, plus a Toronto Hydro fee for disconnection and reconnection
The service mast named in that list is the metal pipe on an outside wall that carries an overhead utility wire down to the meter. Read the scope before the total. A lower range that leaves out permits is not the same offer as a higher range that includes them.
Underneath those totals, RenoHouse's component table prices a new 200-amp panel at $500 to $1,000 for the equipment alone. It prices a new meter base, the outdoor socket the utility meter plugs into, at $200 to $500 where one is required.
Older houses have their own rows in the same RenoHouse guide. A 60-amp to 200-amp upgrade is listed at $2,000 to $3,500, and a fuse box to 200-amp breaker panel conversion at $2,500 to $4,000. RenoHouse also says that where a house has knob-and-tube or aluminum wiring, a panel upgrade is often part of a rewiring project. The electrical panel upgrade cost page lists every panel row this site has sourced.
The Fees That Can Sit Outside the Electrician's Price
Some charges on a Toronto panel job are set by bodies other than the electrician. ESA says its fees vary with the type of work. Its fees page says the minimum fee for a residential notification of inspection is $88. ESA says the fee is paid when the notification of work, or permit, is submitted. That notification is the filing that tells ESA an electrical job is under way.
Three more charges can appear:
- Foxwood Electric's worked example puts the Toronto Hydro service upgrade fee and the ESA inspection together at around $900.
- RenoHouse's panel guide lists a City of Toronto permit line at $100 to $250.
- The same RenoHouse table has a utility disconnect and reconnect line and says the charge varies by utility.
Electrician in Toronto also mentions a Toronto Hydro fee to disconnect and reconnect the house. Ask the electrician which utility charge applies to your address and whether the quote includes it.
Timing matters as much as price when the panel has to come first. RenoHouse's panel guide says Toronto Hydro must be notified when a service upgrade changes the meter base. It calls Hydro scheduling, at 2 to 4 weeks, usually the bottleneck, and puts the whole process from start to inspection certificate at 3 to 6 weeks. Plan the generator date with that lead time in view.
Amps Logics Electric's guide suggests asking whether a quote includes ESA permits and inspection fees. The same question works for the city permit and the Hydro charge. A quote that lists them apart and a quote that folds them in can both be complete.

What Changes With a Sub-Panel Setup
Not every standby install puts the whole house on the generator. A sub-panel is a smaller breaker panel fed from the main one, holding only chosen circuits. RenoHouse's generator guide describes its smallest tier, 7.5 to 11 kW at $6,500 to $9,500 installed, as feeding a sub-panel of critical circuits. It names the furnace blower, sump pump and fridge among them, and says the main panel stays dark during an outage.
For that tier, the same guide says the switch is a sub-panel ATS mounted between the main panel and a dedicated critical-loads sub-panel. Kolji Bros. Electrical's list of upgrade signs names a whole-home standby generator, and an essential-circuits setup is not on that list. Neither source says a sub-panel removes the need for a service upgrade. Ask the electrician whether the load calculation for the chosen circuits leaves the existing service in place.
RenoHouse's generator guide says the right generator size comes from a load calculation, a tally of what the circuits that must stay on actually draw. The guide to sizing a standby generator for a GTA home walks through that tally. Where the switch hardware physically sits is covered in where a transfer switch goes in a Toronto home.
RenoHouse's panel guide prices a 60-amp to 100-amp sub-panel addition at $800 to $2,000. That row sits in the guide's general price table rather than in a generator setup, so treat it as a rough marker for the hardware only.
Which Home Standby Generator Installers Also List Panel Upgrades?
Of the 480 companies in this index, 97 list electrical panel upgrades and 56 list standby generator installation. Only 20 companies hold both categories. The other 36 standby companies do not list panel work, so a homeowner who wants both jobs from one company is choosing from those 20.
Most panel listings come from general electrical firms: 93 of the 97 also carry the electricians category. One company, Calibre Electric in Burlington, lists panel upgrades, standby generator installation and transfer switch installation together. The full panel list is on the electrical panel upgrades category page.
The 20 companies listing both jobs are spread across 16 areas. Mississauga and Burlington hold 3 each, and the site's standby generator installers in Mississauga page shows that city's standby listings. For panel work alone, Richmond Hill holds 12 of the 97, more than any other area, and the Richmond Hill area page groups its companies by category.
The index records the categories a company lists and the area it is based in. It does not record licence status, permit history or how past jobs went. RenoHouse's panel guide says to hire an electrician with a valid Ontario licence and to check it with ESA's contractor lookup tool. Two of the electricians quoted above, Foxwood Electric and a company named Amps Logics Electric, are also listed in this index. Their prices come from their own pages, and quoting them does not change how they are ranked here.
Home Generator Index is a directory: it installs nothing, and a company's place in it is not for sale, as the methodology page sets out. The page for contractors describes a separate paid route for passing on work that the site is building.
Frequently asked questions
Does a standby generator quote include the panel upgrade?
- Not always, so ask. RenoHouse's itemised Toronto generator project has no panel upgrade line, and Kolji Bros. Electrical gives the upgrade a price of its own. Before comparing two quotes, ask each installer whether its number assumes a 200-amp panel is already in place.
How much does a 100-amp to 200-amp panel upgrade cost in Toronto?
- It depends on what the price includes. RenoHouse puts the job at $1,500 to $4,000 with the panel, permit and ESA inspection included. Foxwood Electric gives $2,400 to $4,000 for a contractor's materials and labour, before hydro and inspection fees.
What fees can sit outside the electrician's price?
- Inspection, permit and utility charges. The Electrical Safety Authority sets a minimum residential inspection fee of $88. RenoHouse lists a City of Toronto permit at $100 to $250, and says the utility disconnect and reconnect charge varies by utility.
Can a sub-panel avoid a full service upgrade?
- It changes the setup, but no source here says it removes the upgrade. RenoHouse describes its smallest generator tier feeding a sub-panel of critical circuits while the main panel stays dark. Its panel guide prices a 60-amp to 100-amp sub-panel at $800 to $2,000. An electrician's load calculation settles the question for a given house.
How many listed companies do both panel and generator work?
- Of the 480 companies in this index, 20 list both. Another 36 list standby generator installation without panel upgrades, and 97 list panel upgrades in all. The index does not record licence status, so confirm that with the contractor and with ESA's contractor lookup.
