How Much Does Home Battery Backup Cost in Toronto in 2026?

Last updated:ByStandby Power Desk

A Tesla Powerwall 3 costs $16,500 to $20,700 fully installed in Canada and a FranklinWH aPower S $18,000 to $23,000, according to SolarWeb Canada. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program pays $300 per kWh, capped at $5,000, but only when the battery is installed with new solar in the same project.

What does a home battery system cost installed?

This range rests on 5 independent sources, counted from the 10 priced lines below rather than from a list at the bottom of the page. Every figure was re-read in the page it is credited to. Where sources disagree, both numbers are shown and the disagreement is named in the row's condition; we do not average them and we do not widen a range to cover one.

Each bar runs from the low to the high of one published range, on a scale shared by every home battery backup line quoted in the same unit. Bars that do not line up are sources that do not agree. 4 of 10 priced lines are drawn here; the numbers are the same ones in the table below.

per unit (CAD), fully installed

  • Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh), fully installed

    $16,500–$20,700

  • FranklinWH aPower S, fully installed

    $18,000–$23,000

per system (CAD), before rebates

  • Home battery system, single unit 10-13.5 kWh, fully installed

    $12,000–$20,000

  • Home battery system, two-unit stacked 20-27 kWh, fully installed

    $22,000–$35,000

Not drawn: 6 lines, each the only figure on this page quoted in per unit (CAD), before installation costs, per kWh (CAD), one-time rebate, capped at $5,000 AND at 50% of total costs, per kWh installed (CAD), per project (CAD), labour only, per project (CAD) and combined rebate cap (CAD), as published by the program. With nothing else in the same unit there is no shared scale to draw them on. Every one of them is priced in full in the table below.

  • Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh), fully installed

Fully installed. SolarWeb builds it from a C$10,974 unit price plus a $1,700 Gateway 2, shipping and installation, so the Gateway is not optional at this price.

  • Enphase IQ Battery 5P, unit price

This is the 5 kWh starting unit, not a whole-home system. Enphase is modular, so the figure is where you begin; SolarWeb says it scales to 80 kWh.

  • FranklinWH aPower S, fully installed

Installed. SolarWeb lists this as the drawback of the Franklin option and notes it has a more limited Canadian installer network, so quotes may be harder to compare.

  • Ontario Home Renovation Savings rebate rate, battery storage

A rate, capped twice, and it does not apply to most readers of this page. The battery rebate is capped at $5,000 AND at 50% of total costs, and to be eligible at all the battery must be paired with a NEW solar PV system and sized for it. A battery installed purely for outage backup, with no new solar, qualifies for nothing. Taking it also bars you from a net-metering agreement with your LDC.

  • Home battery system, single unit 10-13.5 kWh, fully installed

A Canada-wide installed figure, not a Toronto one, and it is for one unit of 10-13.5 kWh. Solar Elios prices a budget lithium system of similar size lower, at $8,000-$14,000.

  • Home battery system, two-unit stacked 20-27 kWh, fully installed

Canada-wide, and for two stacked units. Solar Elios notes larger systems cost less per kWh because fixed installation and permitting costs spread over more storage.

  • Battery installation labour only, Canada-wide benchmark

"on top of the battery hardware cost" - this is additional, not a total. It moves with home wiring, panel capacity, and whether the battery is paired with new or existing solar panels.

  • Sub-panel installation (relevant for a battery critical-loads setup)

"+" - $2,000 is an open bound. ElectricSafe says it moves with amperage, the distance from the main panel, and whether a panel upgrade or permit is needed.

  • Ontario Home Renovation Savings maximum, solar panels AND battery storage combined

A maximum, not an amount anyone receives, and it is the COMBINED solar-plus-battery ceiling. Battery storage on its own tops out at $5,000, and only where the battery is paired with a new solar PV system. Both halves are further capped at 50% of total costs.

What is actually inside the number?

Two quotes for the same job are hard to compare when one folds a line into its total and the other leaves it out. This is the shape of the work, stage by stage, with every figure taken from the same priced lines in the table above.

Priced by the box, by the system, or after the rebate

Battery quotes are hard to line up because three different things get called the price: one unit installed, a whole system before rebates, and what is left after Ontario pays part of it.

By the box

  • Tesla Powerwall 3, installed

    $16,500–$20,700

    Fully installed, one unit.

  • FranklinWH aPower S, installed

    $18,000–$23,000

Also fully installed, so this one is comparable with the line above it.

  • Enphase IQ Battery 5P, unit only

    $8,000–$12,000

Unit price before installation, so it is not comparable with the two above without adding labour.

By the system, before any rebate

  • Single unit, 10 to 13.5 kWh

    $12,000–$20,000

    One battery, installed.

  • Two units stacked, 20 to 27 kWh

    $22,000–$35,000

Larger homes often need two or more stacked units.

What an installed price is made of

  • Installation labour only

    $2,500–$6,000

The labour a unit-only price leaves out.

  • Critical-loads sub-panel

    $800–$2,000

Needed where the system backs up essential circuits rather than the whole house.

What Ontario pays back

  • Home Renovation Savings, per kWh

    $300

Paid per kWh of storage. Two caps both apply, a dollar ceiling and half the total cost, whichever binds first, and the row names them on its own unit line.

  • Combined cap, solar and storage

    $10,000

The published ceiling where solar panels and battery storage are claimed together.

What drives the price?

Size, access and how much of the existing electrical and gas work has to be redone move a home battery backup quote more than brand choice does. Each factor below is one a source on this page prices or names.

  • Battery brand and usable capacity in kWh
  • Whether the battery is paired with a new solar PV system (required for HRSP eligibility) or installed standalone
  • Whether the install uses a critical-load subpanel (essential circuits only) or is configured for full-home backup
  • Existing electrical panel capacity and whether an upgrade is needed
  • Number of battery units, larger homes often need two or more stacked units
  • Permit, inspection and utility interconnection requirements

What's specific to Ontario and Toronto?

Ontario adds 13 percent HST, requires an ESA permit for the electrical work and a TSSA permit for anything gas-fired, and licenses who may do each. These are the local rules that change the total.

  • HRSP battery storage pays $300 per kWh, up to $5,000 and up to 50 percent of total costs, confirmed on the program's own page (homerenovationsavings.ca) on 2026-08-25. The battery must be paired with a NEW solar PV system and sized to it: a battery installed purely for outage backup, with no solar, does not qualify for anything.
  • Rebate requires written pre-approval from the Home Renovation Savings Program before installation starts
  • Battery must be sized appropriately to the paired solar system and intended primarily to store the solar energy it produces (load displacement), not grid power
  • Participants who take the HRSP incentive on a system are not eligible for a separate net-metering agreement with their local utility on that same system
  • 13% HST applies to battery hardware and installation labor

How can I pay less?

The biggest savings come from bundling visits, avoiding after-hours rates, and checking which fees a quote already contains. Each tip below is tied to a figure in the table above.

  • Pair the battery with a new solar PV installation in the same project, since a standalone battery does not qualify for the HRSP rebate
  • Apply for HRSP pre-approval before signing an installation contract; installing first voids eligibility with no exceptions
  • Compare installed quotes from at least two certified installers, since installation labor is a large share of total cost
  • Size the battery to actual critical loads rather than whole-home capacity to control both hardware cost and rebate-eligible sizing

How did we research these numbers?

Every price on this page was found in the page it is credited to, and recorded with the sentence that carries it. Where a figure could not be found in its source it was removed rather than adjusted. Here is what that left, and what it could not settle.

  • Confirmed Canadian installed pricing exists for three major home battery products: Tesla Powerwall 3 runs $16,500 to $20,700 CAD fully installed, FranklinWH aPower S runs $18,000 to $23,000 CAD installed, and the Enphase IQ Battery 5P runs roughly $8,000 to $12,000 CAD for the unit alone before installation.
  • Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program lists solar panels and battery storage together at up to $10,000 combined on its own site. The widely repeated breakdown of $300 per kWh capped at $5,000 comes from third-party rebate guides rather than from the program's published page, so treat the per-kWh figure as unconfirmed and check the current terms with the program before budgeting on it. Under that third-party breakdown the rebate is also capped at 50 percent of the battery's purchase cost, up to 50 percent of the battery's purchase cost, and this rate is confirmed directly on the program's own official page as of this research pass, not just on a third-party rebate aggregator. It applies only when the battery is installed together with a new solar PV system in the same project; a battery-only installation does not qualify.
  • The rebate requires written pre-approval before installation starts; installing first and applying afterward gets the claim denied with no exceptions.
  • Sources disagree meaningfully on Tesla Powerwall 3 pricing: SolarWeb Canada's dealer-facing figure of $16,500-$20,700 sits well above a competing Canadian aggregator's $12,500-$14,000 quote seen elsewhere in the market, which is why this file only cites the figure directly confirmed on SolarWeb Canada's own page rather than blending the two.
  • A broader Canada-wide benchmark (Solar Elios) puts a single 10-13.5 kWh home battery system at $12,000-$20,000 installed and a stacked 20-27 kWh system at $22,000-$35,000, both before any rebate, which brackets the brand-specific figures above.
  • Critical-load subpanel cost was not found published for a battery-specific installation; the general sub-panel figure from an Ontario electrician ($800-$2,000+) is used here as a proxy since a battery critical-loads panel is functionally the same type of installation.
  • Verified 2026-08-02 against the program's own site: it publishes only the combined 'solar panels and battery storage, up to $10,000' figure. No per-kWh rate appears there. Every per-kWh number on this page is attributed to a third-party guide and is flagged as unconfirmed.

We show a picture only after looking at it, and only where the subject is the installed work. Storefronts, staff portraits, branded vans and manufacturer product shots are held back, because none of them says anything about whether a company can wire a transfer switch.

Work out your own numbers

The table above is what other people paid. These calculators put your own house into the same published figures, and none of them asks for an email address.

What do the terms on a generator quote mean?

Two home battery backup quotes are hard to compare when each uses the same word for a different scope. These 3 terms appear on the line items above, and each one changes what a number covers.

Load displacement
Using the electricity a solar system generates only to meet the home's own consumption, rather than exporting it. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings incentives are provided for load-displacement projects only, and taking one rules out a net-metering agreement with your utility.
Usable capacity
The kilowatt-hours a battery will actually deliver, which is less than its nameplate rating. Rebates paid per kWh and runtime estimates both depend on which figure is being quoted, so ask which one a quote uses.
Critical-loads sub-panel
A second small panel holding only the circuits the battery or generator will carry. It is what makes a battery smaller than the house viable, and it is a separate line item from the battery itself.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Tesla Powerwall 3 cost installed in Ontario?

A Tesla Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) runs $16,500 to $20,700 CAD fully installed, before any rebate.

How much does the Ontario HRSP battery rebate pay?

The Home Renovation Savings program pays $300/kWh for battery storage, capped at $5,000 AND at 50% of total costs. But the condition that decides it comes first: to be eligible, the battery must be paired with a NEW solar PV system and sized for it. A battery installed purely for outage backup, with no new solar, qualifies for nothing. This page used to print worked examples for 10, 13.5, 16.5 and 20 kWh batteries; the program publishes no such examples and those figures also ignored the 50% cap, so they have been removed.

Do I need solar panels to get the battery rebate?

Yes. HRSP pays the $300-per-kWh rebate (capped at $5,000) only when the battery is installed together with a new solar PV system in the same project; battery-only installations do not qualify for any of that amount.

How much rebate would a 13.5 kWh battery like the Powerwall 3 get?

The Home Renovation Savings program pays $300/kWh for battery storage, capped at $5,000 AND at 50% of total costs. But the condition that decides it comes first: to be eligible, the battery must be paired with a NEW solar PV system and sized for it. A battery installed purely for outage backup, with no new solar, qualifies for nothing. This page used to print worked examples for 10, 13.5, 16.5 and 20 kWh batteries; the program publishes no such examples and those figures also ignored the 50% cap, so they have been removed.

What does a FranklinWH aPower S system cost installed in Canada?

$18,000 to $23,000 CAD fully installed.

What does an Enphase IQ Battery 5P cost?

Roughly $8,000 to $12,000 CAD for the unit itself, before installation costs.

Can the HRSP rebate cover more than half the battery cost?

No, the rebate never exceeds 50 percent of the battery's purchase cost, regardless of size.

Is there a cap on the HRSP battery rebate?

The Home Renovation Savings program pays $300/kWh for battery storage, capped at $5,000 AND at 50% of total costs. But the condition that decides it comes first: to be eligible, the battery must be paired with a NEW solar PV system and sized for it. A battery installed purely for outage backup, with no new solar, qualifies for nothing. This page used to print worked examples for 10, 13.5, 16.5 and 20 kWh batteries; the program publishes no such examples and those figures also ignored the 50% cap, so they have been removed.

What does a home battery system cost in Canada if I'm not set on one specific brand?

A broader Canada-wide benchmark puts a single 10-13.5 kWh battery system at $12,000 to $20,000 fully installed, and a larger stacked 20-27 kWh system at $22,000 to $35,000, both before any rebate.

Does adding a battery mean I need a new sub-panel?

Often yes, if you want a dedicated critical-loads panel instead of backing up the whole house. A general Ontario sub-panel installation runs $800 to $2,000 or more, similar in scope to a battery critical-loads panel.

Questions to ask your contractor

  1. Which loads does this design carry, and what runtime does it assume?
  2. Is a critical load panel included, and which circuits go on it? What a battery system costs
  3. Where does the enclosure mount, and what clearances does it need?
  4. Can this system be paired with solar or a generator later?
  5. What does the warranty cover on the battery, and is capacity loss included?
